Approaches to Radical Prostatectomy

ROBOTIC ASSISTED LAPAROSCOPIC RADICAL PROSTATECTOMY

RADICAL PROSTATECTOMY
STANDARD APPROACH

 

Advantages:

  • Tiny incisions

  • 0% Transfusion rate

  • Shorter catheter time 5 vs. 14 days

  • Immediate urinary control

  • Complete nerve sparing with improved erections

  • Significantly shorter return to normal activities ( 1-2 weeks )

  • Equal Cancer Cure Rate

 

Disadvantages:

  • Relatively new technique - performed for last 3 years

  • None specifically

 

Advantages:

  • Time Tested
    the standard operation until the laparoscopic operation became available

Disadvantages:

  • Large incision

  • 30% transfusion rate

  • Longer catheter time

  • Urinary control appears to be less satisfactory compared to Laparoscopic Approach

  • Longer time to normal activities
