ROBOTIC NEPHRECTOMY

Kidneys are located in the posterior abdomen and are responsible for filtering urine from the blood.

The da Vinci Surgical System enables surgeons to perform three types of robotic nephrectomies (partial, simple, radical). A robotic partial nephrectomy is a procedure to remove a small tumor from the kidney, without removing the entire kidney. A robotic simple nephrectomy is the total removal of a kidney when it becomes a chronic problem or loses its function. A robotic radical nephrectomy is the removal of the kidney with all the surrounding fat, fascia and the adrenal gland. All three procedures utilize minimally invasive techniques, such as operating through tiny ports. The robot allows great precision in disconnecting large blood vessels from the kidney, which is a vital part of the operation.

(After the kidney is disconnected, it is placed in a bag and the entire kidney is removed intact)
