Associated Urology of Bergen-Passaic Celebrates Their
750th da Vinci Robotic Prostatectomy Successfully Performed

From The New Jersey M.D. News -- December 2006

More than 175 patients joined in to help Associated Urology Bergen-Passaic celebrate the 750th successful da Vinci robotic prostatectomy.

Last month, Associated Urology of Bergen-Passaic celebrated the completion of their 750th robotic laprascopic prostatectomy since they began performing this procedure back in 2001. This completely extraperitoneal approach, with its state-of-the-art da Vinci robotic surgical system, minimizes the complications associated with the "open" surgery traditionally performed for the treatment of prostate cancer. The office staff contacted as many of the 750 men as they were able to reach, and invited them to join the festivities taking place November 4. They had no clue as to how many of these would actually attend, so they reserved the Grand Ballroom of the Saddle Brook Holiday Inn and ordered a massive quantity of food. This was quite fortunate, because about 250 people arrived to share this milestone with Dr. Vincent Lateri, Dr. Michael Esposito and Dr. Mutahar Ahmed. It was also an appropriate time to announce the upcoming arrival of Dr. Gregg Lavallo, who will be joining the practice in the near future.

The guests, who consisted primarily of men who had undergone this procedure and some spouses, were anxious to share their experiences with each other and with members of the media. For example, Ian Simms had his prostate removed with Dr. Esposito at the controls of the da Vinci robot in February 2006. "I've had minor procedures that required more recovery time," he said. "I was out of bed and walking the same evening." James Chambers, a patient of Dr. Lantieri's had his procedure on July 2006. He was equally satisfied with the outcome. "Everything I was told was just what happened. Besides feeling the catheter, there was absolutely no other discomfort. I was back to normal in three weeks, related Mr. Chambers. Another gentlemen, Istven Nadj, who had his surgery back in April 2004, was approximately the 300th patient to undergo the da Vinci procedure at Associated Urology of Bergen-Passaic. After researching his options on the Internet, Mr. Nadj had a consultation with Dr. Esposito, "Dr. Esposito made me feel confident," said Mr. Nadj. "He was not being a salesman. He was an honest person to talk to."

The afternoon was thoroughly enjoyed by all who were in attendance. While sampling the many offerings at the beautifully arranged buffet lunch, patients had the opportunity to discuss their particular experiences with one another. The wives who attended were eager to share their enthusiasm for this procedure as well. For those who wanted to learn more about the da Vinci robot, one was prominently on display and a demonstration was given to many of the guests. The ambitious effort of photographing all of the "da Vinci alumni" in the room was undertaken with surprising success. Perhaps the most memorable part of the afternoon was the short talk given by the physicians. One could not help but recognize the deep sense of pride and accomplishment felt by each as they spoke of learning how to perfect this procedure. If the smiling faces looking back at them wre any indication of their success, their efforts were certainly well spent.
